Site Plan
First Floor Plan
There are two main entrances on the first floor. One coming from campus and the other coming from the community or from the Town Hall. All other exterior doors are emergency exits only, with the exception of the shipping and receiving room, and the exhibit hall. When one enters into the building through the main entrances, it is a large volume space and very public. There is seating near the entrances for waiting areas, reading, or whatever other "public" activity. Adjacent to the entrance is the Exhibit Hall. It too is open to the public and for this reason I wanted to keep it close to the main entrance for ease of access. As one moves more into the building away from the exhibit hall, there is a coffee/commons area that can be used for eating, meetings, etc. Across from the commons area are the public restrooms and elevator. As one continues walking through the building the volume of the spaces changes and becomes more private as the rooms become more private and controlled. A corridor leads to the work spaces and is controlled and monitored by the administration. As you can see in the renderings, the public spaces have larger windows and are more open, and the more private controlled spaces have smaller windows and are more closed off. The use of smaller windows controls the amount of light that is entering into the work rooms and laboratories to help with the preservation of the materials, and also to reinforce the idea that these spaces are not public.
The courtyard as you can see in the drawing above, is composed of 3 circular elements. These would be stone, concrete, or another paving material. The courtyard space serves as an outdoor place to house temporary exhibits, as well as a meeting place, reading room, and transition between the two structures. I choose to use circular shapes to help reinforce the strong geometry of the new library, and also to reflect the surrounding landscape. The middle circle represents the joining of the two buildings.

Second Floor Plan
As you enter the second floor from the main staircase you are greeted by an information/control desk. This serves as a place to receive information on the types of services that are housed on the second floor, and also as a control desk to prevent materials from being taken out of the library. A reading room with ample seating and natural light is on the left with public restrooms and elevator on the right. As you continue moving through the second floor work rooms are on the right, as well as emergency stairs, and the administrative offices are on the left. These offices control the use of the work rooms and also monitor the open stack space and reading room. The open stack space is the final space on the second floor and houses materials and books that can be studied and looked at in the reading room.

As you can see in the elevations above, the volume of the spaces varies between the different parts of the building. This is to correspond with the identity and use of the space.
