research
For this project, I studied other Research Libraries on major university campuses. I also looked at libraries that mixed existing structure with new structure. The libraries that I found that were most similar to the requirements of this project are as follows:
James B. Hunt Jr. Library
North Carolina State University
Snohetta Architects

preliminary sketches
For my design, I wanted the new library to frame the existing town hall in some way in order to be respectful to the existing Town Hall structure. I also felt that this would create a natural outdoor space that could serve as a transition between the old and new, while still meeting the needs of the new library. I ultimately chose to go with the final sketch of the 4 squares surrounding the Town Hall. I felt that this provided the most interesting use of space, and achieved the goals that I had with the layout of the interior spaces. I felt that this design was the most open and inviting to all parts of the campus and the community and could be easily accessed by pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
